Savage disengages the atmospheric quality of paintings made in early 80's to allow a more obvious visual narrative to emerge. In this body of work, Savage experiments with the organization of the picture plane and reintroduces the use of wax to define forms. The resulting impasto surface hangs on the underlying drawing in much the same way an armature is used in sculpture. Forms are defined primarily by surface textures and exhibit the same closeness and subtle variation in hue and value found in Savage's earlier atmospheric paintings. This body of work is full of nuance, mystery and has a visual stickiness that just does not register with the viewer until they actually experience the image up close. There are very few Savage paintings in this particular vein and they are quite rare.
